In my last post "Mobile Appraiser Technology - UMPC "First Impressions" I discussed some initial impressions about my new tabletkiosk eo™ UMPC v7110 and Learning Curve issues as I began integrating a ultra mobile PC into my appraisal and data collection work flow.
Today I begin some of the normal software installations that I typically make to any new computer and some that will be specific to the tablet PC.
Internet Security: Because a UMPC is primarily a "collaboration" device that links me with with the world I definitely need to install anti-virus and anti-spyware applications. I've been real happy with the free version of Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus software so that was the first site that I went to. What I didn't know was that earlier this Summer they also launched a free ewido Anti-Spyware application!

The ewido anti-spyware 4.0 offering includes comprehensive malware protection against rapidly growing threats such as spyware, adware, dialers, keyloggers, trojans and worms. Read the full press release
Productivity Utilities: With those basic security applications now installed I can move on to a couple of other downloads.
Screen Capture: The first one is my favorite free screen capture utility - MWSnap. MWSnap is a small yet powerful program for taking screen captures of a desktop, an active window, menu, or a specified part of the screen. The program supports BMP, JPG, TIFF,PNG and GIF formats, with user selected color depth and quality settings. It also includes a zooming tool, a screen ruler and a color picker as well as system wide hotkeys and preset selection sizes. A very nice program, one of the best - if not the best, you can currently find for free.
Real Estate Calculator: Next comes the free HP12-C Calculator. I've used this fully functional HP-12C Financial Calculator emulator from Telemark Software for years. They have a free download available on their web site. Click here.
File Sharing: Yesterday I installed Folder Share on both my eo and my desktop computers. FolderShareTM is a service that allows you to securely keep files synchronized between your devices, share files with friends or colleagues, and remotely download your files from any web browser.
Microsoft Office OneNote - OneNote 2003 is a powerful note-taking program that enables you to electronically capture, organize, and reuse typed or handwritten notes on a portable computer, a desktop, or a Tablet PC. OneNote 2003 provides a single place to customize and organize your information—in a way that works best for you.
Using OneNote 2003 on Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 brings ink, text, and Web content together in one easy program. It offers superior flexibility to search both handwritten and text notes and to include diagrams, charts, graphics, and drawings. Click here to download the 60-day trial version.
Jeff Henderson of Apex Software says: "Think of Windows Journal as a single piece of paper, a lot like word on your desktop, and when you want to type or write a new letter you open a new screen. OneNote is a File cabinet of Main Topics (CE, Devices, Tradeshows, Web, Promos, Personal) Under these I have tabs, and in each tabbed section I have notes…. I could go on and on, but watch this demo "
