If you click on the Tablet PC / UMPC category in the Appraisal Scoop blog you'll find many of my experiences with the tabletkiosk eo™ UMPC v7110. They include both software and hardware installation topics as I continue integrating a ultra mobile PC into my appraisal and data collection work flow.
My eo model is the v7110 with a 1.0Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM, a 60GB HDD, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g wireless networking, and MS Windows XP Tablet Edition. GOSH! Doesn't that sound like it's got everything a "Mobile Appraiser" could ask for?! No so "UMPC-Breath"! I quickly discovered that I needed a few more things to get productive. So I ordered what I considered to be MY . . .
MUST HAVE ACCESSORIES . . .
- USB to Ethernet Adapter (for when you don't have WiFi access)
- WriteShield Screen Protector (better safe than sorry)
- Automobile Charger (the standard battery runs down quickly)
- Bump case (the eo has a rather slippery finish and no "grip")
- USB / Bluetooth Keyboard
- USB Memory Card w/ Adapter or Thumbdrive
- 6-Battery "extended" battery
My plan was to blog about each of these devices as they arrived but I'm finding that the REAL experts in UMPC technology have the same idea and are doing a much better job of showing. . .
How To Accessorize Your UMPC! Read on . . .
For the REAL UMPC experts we turn to UltraMobileGeek and Uber Tablet!
UMPC as a Desktop Replacement is a topic that is tackled by Hugo Ortega of Uber Tablet. His post includes two videos, starting with a hands on demonstration of a tabletkiosk eo and then a second one focusing on what he calls the "Mobile Permanent Office". (Isn't that sort of like saying "Jumbo Shrimp"?). Anyway . . he says:
"Because the i7210 is the first UMPC (Microsoft Origami Project derivative) to run an Intel Processor with 2MB of L2 Cache [providing multitasking abilities] the possibilities of replacing a notebook or desktop are “somewhat” closer. Using i7210’s capacity to “Extend its Desktop” I demonstrate just how one might increase their own productivity in the office, or home."
Becoming Ultra-Mobile: Accessorizing Your UMPC by UltraMobileGeek picks up where Hugo leaves off. The author (goes by the name of ThoughtFix) says:
"UMPCs are an "in-between" size: Richer functionality than a PDA but larger. Weaker than a full laptop or "convertible" tablet yet much smaller. This presents a series of hurdles that can relatively easily be jumped in incorporating the UMPC into your life."
Here's a preview of his 4-Step "Mobility" Program:
- Step 1: Decide on your purpose.
- Step 2: Choosing an Ultra Mobile PC
- Step 3: Accessorize for mobility!
- Step 4: The Geek Bag
Conclusion: Evolve! - Ultra-Mobile PCs are part of a movement into lifestyle computing. Computers, especially integrated with the Internet, have become essential tools to many lives. Don't settle with what you have out of the box - Adapt it, change it, and make it your own. On the UMPC side, keep changing around your accessories, software, and user interface until it suits you best. It's your ultra mobile experience: let it evolve.
